Poor Mr. Drake has been looking pretty lonely since his ladies were lost to the owl. We moved him into the girls playhouse during the night and when we aren’t home. I stapled chicken wire on all the openings and gave him a nice bed and little pool with some green peas to keep him entertained.
When we are home he can be in his yard and talk to the chicks through the coop wires.
We give him lots of extra cuddles and love too. He’s really very sweet.
The chicks who are now a month old get lots of love too.
Well there’s some good news for Mr. Drake! He won’t be lonely for too much longer. Yesterday we drove to Metzer Farms and picked up these hours old baby Pekin ducklings.
Cute much? Seriously, how is it possible to be this cute?? To say the kids are excited would be a slight understatement.
So now we have ducklings in the craft room with a heating pad, chicks in the closed coop with a heat lamp, and Mr. Drake duck in the playhouse with frozen peas! Soon all will be harmoniously together in this beatiful coop that is being made for us by Dare2Dream Farms.
We will be able to separate them so they can have their individual heat requirements while being close enough to get to know each other safely. They will be safe from all predators (land and air) in this full enclosure and we can still use the electric netting to let them range when we are home. Happy solution for all I hope!
